Kevin joined Smith & Gesteland's tax area in 1994, where he is now a partner. Prior to that, he spent nine years in public accounting, primarily with the international firm of KPMG Peat Marwick.

High-Tech Clients
Kevin understands the unique issues facing high-tech businesses throughout Dane County. He has assisted several high-tech clients through the stages of establishing the business entity; selecting software; dealing with income, payroll and sales tax issues; financing; and managing the growth of the business.

Tax Compliance
Kevin has significant experience with tax compliance, primarily in the manufacturing and high-technology fields. He has assisted these companies with multi-state taxation, alternative minimum tax, research and experimental credits, and other issues.

Business Consulting and Tax Planning
He has assisted many clients in planning for taxes. He has analyzed and reorganized a client's workers' compensation program resulting in annual savings of $90,000; assisted a tax free merger of a C corporation into an S corporation resulting in tax savings of $450,000; initiated state nexus study, whereby duties of sales representatives were slightly modified, resulting in annual state income tax savings of $300,000; and performed a research credit diagnostic review resulting in a state refund of $200,000. Kevin has also assisted closely held businesses and their owners with overall tax and succession planning issues.

Individual Tax Planning
Kevin has provided individual tax planning assistance ranging from wealth maximization strategies, stock option planning, retirement and estate planning.

IRS Examinations
He has significant experience dealing with Internal Revenue Service examinations and was responsible for the successful outcome of an IRS examination with a proposed assessment of $1,530,000 resulting in no overall change in tax.
